What Am I Reading Wednesday (10/25/2017)

It's time for a special "on the road" edition of What Am I Reading Wednesday!

This week I'm traveling in Pennsylvania for my 'day job', and have just settled down for the evening to decompress and treat us all to a blog post!

This week's book is:

 Title: "Keeper"

Author: Kim Chance

First Reading: Yes! (I was lucky enough to receive an ARC Kindle copy!)

Initial Impression: I love how the MC (main character) actually reads like the teenager she is. Sometimes my biggest pet peeve with YA novels can be young characters who all sound like middle-aged adults. (See below for further explanation.)

Final Thoughts: I cannot wait for this book's release in January 2018, I have a feeling it's going to be a hit!

I am so in love with this cover!

Upon receiving my ARC Kindle copy of Kim Chance's debut YA fantasy novel, "Keeper", I felt more than a little invested in how this book could possibly have turned out. As I've said in previous blog posts, I've been following Kim's journey as a writer through her YouTube channel for over a year now, and to witness a new author's successes in the (traditional) publishing industry is an amazing thing.

What do I love most about Lainey Styles, the main character of "Keeper"? I love the fact that she is a teenage character who actually speaks and acts like a teenager! We've all witnessed those sneaky, age-defying YA characters. You know, the ones who look like inexperienced sixteen year-olds, but then turn around and act like forty year-olds who've seen the dark underbelly of the world and emerged wiser for it. (I'm embellishing a little here, but you know what I'm talking about.)

Lainey isn't like that. She's just a young girl worrying about the things she should be worrying about at that age: How will she do on her SAT scores? Will she get into a good college? Will she always be close to her best friend? Who's the cute guy who saves her from a cosplaying creep? What's with the 200 year-old witch attacking her in the parking lot?

Well, maybe that last one isn't typical. Just think about how many ancient witches would be running around haunting people if it was...Never mind.

The point is, this is one of the sudden, and very creepy, events that forces Lainey to evolve as a young person throughout the book. This is the kind of character development that I find the most realistic, and for me it helps me connect with the character on a much deeper level.

As always, The Writing Desk Blog is a spoiler free zone, so I'll leave you here Writing Desk Readers. Want to know what happens next? Well, don't forget "Keeper" will be released on January 30, 2018!
