What Am I Reading Wednesday (6/22/2016)

Good Evening, Friends!

I'm sure you'll all remember Monday's Writing Resources post about the fabulous YouTube channel hosted by Jenna Moreci, right? Right? (Hint: Click on "Monday" to catch up!)

In that post I made a brief mention of Jenna's first published novel, "EVE: The Awakening", but didn't go into too much detail because...we're going to tie it in for this week's "What Am I Reading Wednesday"!

So, without further ado...

Title: EVE: The Awakening

Author: Jenna Moreci

First Reading: Yes, indeed!

Initial Impression: Jenna may be a cyborg, but Eve is a Chimera...whoa.

I think it goes pretty much without saying at this point that we host no book spoilers around here, (Beware, ye who post the spoilers!), so no worries there. Also, since I officially started "EVE" last weekend, I wouldn't be able to spoil anything anyway. I don't even know what's going to happen yet!

So, you must be asking, what's this book about anyway?

"EVE: The Awakening" is considered a new adult science fiction novel, ("new adult" meaning older than the teenyboppers, but not quite over the big 3.0. yet), which, to me, also falls into the realm of a near-future story as opposed to hardcore science fiction. There are still elements of Eve's world that are familiar to what we have now, but with enough changes (both large and small) to suggest that more than a few years have passed.

One of the key changes in this not-so-distant version of Earth, is the development of a new stage in human evolution: the Chimeras. Human beings who are stronger, faster, and possess certain ...gifts that the average human doesn't.

(If you get the mythological reference, bonus points for you! If not, I suggest you go look it up. Is their title directly related to the characteristics of the new humans? Not necessarily. But go enjoy learning something new anyway!)

Eve learns early on that she is a Chimera, and unfortunately sees all of the pitfalls that come with being feared by those who are mistrustful of anyone belonging to this group.

Oh, and the other big difference between Eve's world and ours?

Aliens.

That's right, people, aliens have made a stopover on Earth and are hanging around like that obnoxious relative who won't leave and eats all of your favorite foods out of the fridge! (You know who you are.) These Interlopers have an unhealthy interest in the Chimeras, and it's looking like Eve's time as an anonymous student at the elite Billington University may be short lived if anyone ever finds out who she really is.

I can't wait to read the rest!

When describing Jenna Moreci, I honestly have to share an excerpt from her official bio on Amazon. Many author bios can sound a little dry, (hey, it's hard to come up with something original to say about yourself, I still don't have a true author bio nailed down!) but I think this one sums things up rather nicely:

"She (Jenna Moreci) specializes in writing adorable, romantic goodness punctuated by moments of extreme violence and bloodshed. Her sanity is questionable. Some of Jenna's other talents include prolific cursing, spilling/dropping things, accidentally making people cry, and drawing."

Has anyone else read "EVE: The Awakening" yet? What did you think? Do you prefer new adult novels to YA, or are both your cup of tea? I want to know!

**Disclaimer: The "What Am I Reading Wednesday" posts are my personal opinion and not to be taken as "professional" literary reviews. I just love to share books I've enjoyed!**
