What Am I Reading Wednesday (7/12/2017) + An Exciting Announcement!

Evening, Ladies and Gents!

Have you been dying for a new What Am I Reading Wednesday? Are you a fan of short stories? Does the horror genre make your little heart go flippity flippity? (If you can guess what insanely random movie that last bit is from, you will have my immense respect.)

Well, buckle-up kids, because today we're going to talk about Some Fucked Up Shit.

Title: “Some Fucked Up Shit”

Author: Nicole Sixx

First Reading: Yes.

Initial Impression: Love the title, but exactly how fucked up could it be?

Final Thoughts: Made the mistake of reading a certain story right before bed...I'll let you guess which one.

As much as I love "full-length" novels and novellas, there are times when there's nothing like reading a good short story. Or two. Or three. I like having the option to dip quickly in and out of multiple plot lines, finding out how things end for the protagonists within a matter of hours instead of days or weeks.

So, when I found Nicole Sixx's collection of horror stories I had a feeling I'd be in for a treat!

This book was a thrill to read, from beginning to end. Each tale is woven with care, tapping into the kinds of fears many people probably don't even realize they have. For me, it was the more subtle details that gave me chills before any glaringly evil elements revealed themselves.

I will say, I did make the mistake of reading a certain story in the book right before going to sleep. Or at least trying to go to sleep. But I suppose that's the hallmark of a good horror story, isn't it? The ability to keep your brain ticking long after the story is over. Even though I know now how that particular one ends, I won't be doing that again.

Of course our No Spoilers policy prevents me from saying which of these fucked up tales gave me temporary insomnia, but if anyone else has read this collection, or is planning on reading it soon, let me know which story you think it was!

The first thing you see on Nicole Sixx's social media accounts is: "I write scary stories".

Well, she ain't lying.

I first became aware of Sixx as a writer through her presence on Instagram and Twitter, chronicling the adventures of someone who is clearly a night owl.

She also has a webpage where you can find out more information about her inspiration as a writer and available works.

Now, for some VERY EXCITING NEWS! Which, as it turns out, also ties in with today's book!

As my returning readers will know, one of my goals for the second quarter of this year was to come up with new ways to connect and grow with the writing community on social media. After much planning and communication, I have decided to launch a new post series:

Author Interviews!

I am beyond excited about this! The plan, as of right now, is to include one published author interview per month here on The Writing Desk. (Assuming I can get that many authors to talk to me on a regular basis.) These authors could either be self or traditionally published, in a variety of genres. If all goes well with this project through the end of 2017, and if it's something you as the readers want to see more of, I will make every effort to continue this post series in 2018.

Our very first interview will be this Friday (7/14/2017) with today's What Am I Reading Wednesday Author, Nicole Sixx!

See you then!
