Librarian for a Day! (aka - Taking Time to Read)

In case you missed it! I know this article is from a month ago, but I recently found it again and felt the need to share.

First I have to say, I was an unbelievably lucky kid. My parents started reading to me from Day 1, and not once did they refuse to take ten minutes out of their day to sit down and read a book or chapter with me. Or even to make the quick drive down to our town's small local library. That constant exposure to books is the reason I developed the love for reading I have as an adult, hands down.

Granted, I don't get to enjoy nearly as many books now as I did as a kid, (Why do I have to have a job, again? Oh, right, that pesky mortgage thing.) but I've always made it a point to give my nieces and nephews, cousins, and even my friends' children, books any chance I get. And if they want me to read to them, I'll gladly drop whatever it is I'm doing. Not that I think their parents aren't reading to them enough, but you can never have too many books in the house!

That's why I was so impressed when the Smithsonian article came out about four-year-old Daliyah. This girl loves reading so much, she's already made her way through over 1000 books! (Be still, my heart!) And a huge credit goes to her mother for signing up her daughter, who already loved reading beforehand, for Georgia's "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" program.

Where was this program when I was in preschool? I would have been all over that!

After she gained recognition for her accomplishments, Daliyah's mother contacted the United States Library of Congress to arrange a visit, but instead of a standard tour, Daliyah was escorted by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and made an honorary Librarian for a Day!

How amazing is that? That is an opportunity she will always remember.

If you're interested in planning your own visit to the Library of Congress, you can find more information on their website.

Wishing Daliyah the best of luck as she prepares to start kindergarten, and keep on reading, girl!
