Writing Resources: Save the Cat! Writes A Novel

It's been a while since we've done a Writing Resources post! I'm actually planning on doing a roundup soon of all of the resources we've talked about so far here on the blog. Stay tuned for that!

Those of you who have been with me for a while might have already noticed my appreciation for Save the Cat!, so I thought it was time for a dedicated blog post.

At first I couldn't decide whether to share this book as a Writing Resource or as part of What Am I Reading Wednesday. But it really has proven to be an invaluable resource and guide for me, both helping me rewrite the book I finished in 2019 and outlining the new book I started in 2020.

Title: Save the Cat! Writes a Novel

Author: Jessica Brody

Cost: $ (Average cost for a paperback book)

In the simplest terms, Save the Cat! Writes a Novel takes you through the fifteen beats involved in nearly every narrative (books, movies, plays, etc.) and breaks down each key story moment that corresponds with the beats. These are absolutely not set in stone, but after reading this book and becoming more familiar with the beats themselves, I find myself spotting them in other books I read or movies I watch!

Have you tried the Save the Cat! method before in your own writing? If so, did it build on outlining skills you've used before, or was this a new technique?
