What Am I Reading Wednesday (01/22/2020)

The What Am I Reading Wednesday posts are back!

My returning Writing Desk Readers will know it's been a long time since we've done WAIRW here on the blog, but one of my quarterly goals for the new year is to do at least one of these per month. For my newer readers, these posts are a brief feature of a book I've recently read and are strict NO SPOILER zones. So, there's no fear that I'll give something away if you haven't had a chance to read the book yet.

Title: Then She Was Gone

Author: Lisa Jewell

First Reading: Yes (January Book Club Pick)

Initial Impression: Revealing the central crime/mystery at the beginning of the novel leaves the reader many scenarios to imagine as the rest of the book unfolds.

Final Thoughts: While the ending didn't play out how I'd imagined it would, I still could not put this one down!

What I find interesting about novels like Then She Was Gone, is the revealing of the central crime at the beginning of the story. It eliminates the initial build up of suspense over what the mystery will be, but it also enables the reader to play detective in a different way than if they were given clues that lead up to an event that takes place later on.

While it is told from multiple points of view (POV), the book focuses largely on Laurel Mack's life in the aftermath of the disappearance of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Ellie. In fact, it seems like she's finally getting over the loss of her daughter when a new man enters her life, and suddenly there are too many things reminding her of Ellie for them all to be a coincidence.

That's all I'm going to say for now, I feel like any more detail could give something away. I'll finish by saying, this story grabbed my attention right from the beginning and I ended up finishing this book in less than three days!
