What Am I Reading Wednesday - Christmas Countdown (12/6/2017)

Happy December!

I'm in a very festive mood this holiday season, and what better way to countdown to Christmas than to feature a different book or series and author each week leading up to the holiday? Who knows, you might spot a potential gift for the book lover in your life!

My longtime readers will be familiar with today's featured author, because her debut novel "Justice & Mercy" was one of the first books ever shared on What Am I Reading Wednesday!

Title: "The Justice & Mercy Series"

Author: Britni Patterson

First Reading: Second!

Initial Impression: Everything is bigger in Texas...especially the murders! (Still holds true!)

Final Thoughts: I can't wait to read the next adventure in store for these twin, Texan detectives.

The "Justice & Mercy" cozy mystery series centers around the proprietors of the Givens Detective Agency, Justice (a gun-toting line dancer who can rock a Stetson) and Mercy (an actual genius whose sharp tongue is her best weapon).

Seriously though, you'll have to read the books to find out how the sisters got their names!

Between Mercy's brains and Justice's brawn, the sisters' personalities balance each other out in a hilarious, though often eventful, fashion. And while you would think it would be easy for the twin detectives to stick to their cardinal rule of: "Absolutely NO MURDER CASES", those are exactly the kinds of cases they get called on to handle.

What I love about Patterson's writing, besides the fantastic wry humor sprinkled throughout each book, is that you can really visualize the experiences (both good and bad) that have made the sisters into the adults they are today. Not the least of which includes a childhood accident that left Mercy as a paraplegic, and Justice as her life-long care giver.

Murder. Intrigue. Line dancing. Chili cook-offs with poisoned samples....What could possibly go wrong?

Want to know more? Of course you do!

You'll just have to pick up one of these Texas-sized mysteries for yourself, won't you?

Did I mention that the Givens detectives are also featured in a short story, as part of the 2015 Bouchercon anthology?

Patterson is currently working on the third book in the "Justice & Mercy" series, and I can't wait to see what she's going to throw at the twins next!

About the Author:

Britni Patterson was born and raised in a small border-town in the armpit of Texas. She attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and NC State University for chemical engineering, but she quickly realized that while she loved it when things went boom, engineering hates booms, and therefore she wasn't meant to be an engineer.

Growing up with a West Texas family prone to "swappin' yarns" that have just enough truth to be possible gave her a love of telling stories, and the ability to laugh at anything. Through a series of hysterically bad decisions that somehow ended for the best, Britni now lives in North Carolina, married to a paramedic who keeps ruining her best murder ideas with "truth", two adorable children, and a healthy respect for serendipity's evil twin.
