What Am I Reading Wednesday (8/23/2017)

Greetings Friends!

I am very excited about today's What Am I Reading Wednesday book! Not only because the author is a friend of mine, and not only because it shares some pretty valuable information, but also because this book will tie in with the second Writing Desk Blog Author Interview! That's right, this Friday's post will be an interview with today's featured writer: Tara Lynne Groth.

Title: "Magazine Queries That Worked: Build Income and Authority with Freelance Journalism"

Author: Tara Lynne Groth

First Reading: Yes, indeed!

Initial Impression: How many times have I Googled "How to write a query letter?" and come up with a confusing jumble of instructions?

Final Thoughts: Finally! Someone clearly spelled it out for me. The dreaded query letter does not have to be as daunting as it seems.

Today's book is straight out of the 2017 TBR Business List!

Tara Lynne Groth's latest nonfiction book, "Magazine Queries That Worked: Build Income and Authority with Freelance Journalism", describes her journey from a "day job" with a real estate company, to building her freelance writing business, and finally to the transition into her full-time writing career.

Early on in the book, Tara Lynne also provides definitions for freelance writing and query letter terms that the reader may or may not be familiar with, (I definitely didn't know a couple of them!), and the general timeline that occurs when a writer first queries a publication with a new article idea. This section also includes valuable information on legal/contract terms to consider, and much more.

From there, the book dives into actual examples of query letters that were successful for Tara Lynne as a freelance writer. While these letters are specifically geared towards magazines, newspapers, and similar media outlets, I absolutely believe the basic principles she outlines on how to craft a good query letter could be applied to those sent to literary agents or publishers.

But wait, there's more!

In collaboration with Tara Lynne on this week's What Am I Reading Wednesday and Author Interview posts, she has also arranged for a special Kindle Countdown Deal for "Magazine Queries That Worked", starting Friday!

For those who don't know, the way a Kindle Countdown Deal works is pretty simple: Starting from the kick-off date, the book will start at a predetermined price (in this case, only $0.99!), and slowly increase during the duration of the sale back to full price on the last day.

Details:
*ebook version only*
Start: 8/25/2017 at 5:00pm EST for ONLY $0.99!
End: 9/1/2017
