What Am I Reading Wednesday (07 June 2023)

I was in a bit of a reading slump at the start of the year. With so much on my plate with TKTS and TBTD, I wasn't able to focus on a book for very long and bounced around between a few, trying to find something to break the slump.

I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that Emily Rath is now my official go-to author if I need to shake out the cobwebs and get immediately drawn into a story!

Technically I finished Pucking Around back when it first came out, and I read queer books all year round, but I thought I'd save this gorgeous hunk of a book for a Pride Month WAIRW post.

Title: Pucking Around

Author: Emily Rath

First Reading: Yes! We all know by now how much I love Emily's writing and I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of this beauty!

Initial Impression: Emily already had me hooked when she teased this book as "A why-choose hockey romance with a badass FMC, a Himbo Grinder with chaotic bi energy, an awkward goalie, and an equipment manager who needs a nap". She also may or may not have renewed my interest in hockey in general.

Final Thoughts: The length of this book might seem daunting at first, but it absolutely flew by! It's a sweet story of second-chance, new, and unexpected love all in one. I also have to say I never thought the words "Bye, Avocado!" would make me laugh so hard I nearly fell out of my chair and my dogs became genuinely concerned. (If you know, you know.)

Book Synopsis:

Discover the story that launched the international bestselling Jacksonville Rays Hockey Series!

My name is Rachel Price, and two months ago, I walked away from the perfect man. Sweet and funny, and so hot it should be illegal—we shared one magical night. No names. No strings. I never thought I’d see him again.

I was wrong. It turns out Mr. Perfect is the playboy grinder for the Jacksonville Rays, the NHL’s hottest new hockey team…and I’m his new physical therapist. Oh, and the jerk doesn’t even recognize me!

This fellowship is going to be the longest ten months of my life. Mr. Perfect Mistake will do anything to get back on my good side. Meanwhile, his best friend is the surly new equipment manager always riding my case. Worst of all, I’ve got an uncooperative goalie who thinks I can’t tell he’s hiding an injury!

This is my chance to prove myself, and I’m not risking it for anything. But with one unexpected night, one secret revealed, these men are ready to test all my limits. I can’t fall for a player…let alone three. But if love is a game, these guys are playing to win.

PUCKING AROUND is a spicy ‘why choose’ hockey romance. For the best reader experience, start with the prequel novella That One Night. For a full list of tropes, tags, and CWs, see the author’s website.

About the Author:

My name is Emily Rath (pronounced just like wrath). I write swoony, cinematic, character-driven  fantasies and romances. I like to describe my writing as “adult characters and themes written with YA pacing and voice.” Soooo, basically I write New Adult….which I firmly believe is a thing. You can expect my books to have big casts of characters, lots of drama, lots of kissing, and unpredictable magic.

I currently live in Florida with my husband, son, and cat (who guest stars in my toks). We regularly comb the local beaches looking for shark teeth.  Follow me on Instagram and Tiktok @emilyrathbooks
