What Am I Reading *Friday* (3/24/2017)

As promised, our What Am I Reading Wednesday-now-Friday post!

Title: The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger

Author: Stephen King

First Reading: Yes!

Initial Impression: This is a definite change from the other Stephen King books I've read, and I love it!

Final Thoughts: Very excited to read the next book in the series, and to catch the movie this summer.

Rebooted cover version tied in with
the upcoming 2017 film.
My previous experience with Stephen King's novels (and let's face it, there are quite a few of them!) has included works like "The Dark Half", "The Green Mile" and "Lisey's Story". All of which contain elements of the supernatural or the unknown, but none move as far into the fantasy realm as 'The Gunslinger'.

By the way, if you haven't read "Lisey's Story" yet and are planning on it, be prepared! I lost sleep trying to untwist my mind after that one!

For today's post, I'm not going to summarize "The Gunslinger", mostly because I don't think I'd be able to do it justice. Besides, as we all know, The Writing Desk is a Land of No Spoilers and it's going to stay that way.

I do want to share a short portion of the introduction written by King for the 2003 version of the novel. The full introduction is titled: On Being Nineteen (and a Few Other Things).

Do not skip over this part of the book, you'll regret it!

"Then, in an almost completely empty movie theater (the Bijou, in Bangor, Maine, if it matters), I saw a film directed by Sergio Leone. It was called The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and before the film was even half over, I realized that what I wanted to write was a novel that contained Tolkien's sense of quest and magic but set against Leone's almost absurdly majestic Western backdrop. If you've only seen this gonzo Western on your television screen, you don't understand what I'm talking about - cry your pardon, but it's true." (King, 2003, p. xv)

About the Author:

One of my favorite photos of Stephen King.
Stephen King's career has spanned over 50 novels and 200 short stories, with countless other writings and collaborations in between. (If you really want to try counting them, you can start with The Library on his website.) I guarantee you've seen a movie or television show adapted from his work, even if you haven't read any of his publications.

And with two new works already announced for this year, "Gwendy's Button Box" (novella) and "Sleeping Beauties" (novel), it doesn't look like King will be slowing down anytime soon!

This last bit is purely for fun! How many of you out there knew that Mr. King is a fan of corgis? In case you didn't notice the pup in the photo above, take a look under the desk. A couple years ago, King adopted a new corgi who has been aptly named: Molly, aka the Thing of Evil. You can find Molly through King's Twitter page, where he documents her time spent plotting her next attack and bathing in the blood of her enemies!

Just check these two out:

I bow down to the Thing of Evil!
