What Am I Reading Wednesday (17 January 2024)

It's time for the first WAIRW of 2024!

As I mentioned while wrapping up last year's posts, I read more in 2023 than in the last few years combined. So I have a backlog of books to share! For anyone new to WAIRW, I usually only share books that I enjoyed reading. If the book wasn't for me or I DNF'd, you won't see it on the blog.

Now for today's book!

Title: Strange Love

Author: Ann Aquirre

First Reading: Yes, a post from Ann's Instagram account randomly popped up on my FYP and the blurb immediately got my attention.

Initial Impression: Mistaken identity? A Hunger Games-esque version of the Dating Game? A cinnamon roll alien? A talking dog?? Say less!

Final Thoughts: Strange Love was a lovely reintroduction to alien romance as a genre! The worldbuilding was very well done and Ann was able to tackle the usual sci-fi "how will a human survive on a different planet" questions in ways that blended well with the story. I'm looking forward to the next two books in the Galactic Love series!

But wait! I thought this was my first alien romance, but about halfway through it hit me: It’s not! I read a YA alien romance in high school and for the life of me, I can't remember the title.

Help me find this book! Here's what I remember:

  • It was definitely YA (MC's are in high school)
  • The FMC was a life guard, or possibly on the swim team. She saves the MMC (our alien) from drowning in a lake or pool.
  • The MMC is staying with the parents of a different girl who left to marry another alien from his planet. Sort of a 'Mars Needs Women' type scenario.

Book Synopsis:

He's awkward. He's adorable. He's alien as hell.

Zylar of Kith Balak is a four-time loser in the annual Choosing. If he fails to find a nest guardian this time, he'll lose his chance to have a mate for all time. Desperation drives him to try a matching service but due to a freak solar flare and a severely malfunctioning ship AI, things go way off course. This 'human being' is not the Tiralan match he was looking for.

She's frazzled. She's fierce. She's from St. Louis.

Beryl Bowman's mother always said she'd never get married. She should have added a rider about the husband being human. Who would have ever thought that working at the Sunshine Angel daycare center would offer such interstellar prestige? She doesn't know what the hell's going on, but a new life awaits on Barath Colony, where she can have any alien bachelor she wants.

They agree to join the Choosing together, but love is about to get seriously strange.

About the Author:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ann Aguirre has been a clown, a clerk, a savior of stray kittens, and a voice actress, not necessarily in that order. She loves video games, Korean dramas, music, dogs and cats, and staring at the sea. Though she writes all kinds of genre fiction, she has a major soft spot for a happily ever after.

A futuristic city sprawls in the background, lit up in bright shades of orange, blue, and purple. In the center of the cover stands the darkened silhouette of a tall, humanoid, alien figure.]
